Windows 10 Creators Update

welcome to this week on windows where this week we are all about inspiring the Creator involvement how you might ask with the Windows 10 creators update of course we've got 3d we've got Newseum integration for you gaming enthusiasts and we've got a host of other updates and new features to show up from some of the people who know them best let's start things off with the highly anticipated 3d in Windows 10 do that we sat down with Ben Reed from the windows next generation experiences team to show us some of the cool stuff we can do with these new tools one of the things that I thought that it would be helpful to show would be how we are enabling or empowering and inspiring the Creator within all of us so let's say I'm working on something maybe it's a school project or something that I need to put together a little example of what an aquarium might look like this goldfish doesn't have any ice so I'm going to go use the sticker tool which allows you to apply any 2d image onto a 3d object and I don't have to be an expert in 3d tools there I am just literally use my pen I can use the mouse drawing in 3d might sound like a bit of a daunting thing and so we've made it easy with this really doodle tool so I'm just going to quickly do some foliage here for our fish tank and once I've done that you'll see how this works so there we go I've created one I want to move some of them forwards and backwards so that gives it some more three-dimensional debt now the other thing that I wanted to mention was the community so we have the community which is called BMX 3.com which contains lots and lots of 3d creations from both individuals and professionals and I'm going to find something that somebody else has created and essentially we mix it with my aquarium here there's an isotherm I can view the creation somebody else is put in here and I can place it in my project so I can go back through all the steps so you could use this to show somebody how you've created this there's a 3d creation you can even get a video of it so that you can share it with your friends but a - you can recreate what you've done and then when I'm done I could open up the new view 3d yeah it's just part of the creators update and I can out go ahead and open what I just created so you can see how that works and once that loads you'll be able to move around and see that creation in full 3d so you can see in the demos that I've given and that there are a number of ways that in the Windows 10 creators update we are making it easier for people to unlock and empower their creativity or more on game mode and beam integration Microsoft's new streaming service will solve it over to Peter or Uli and from the Xbox team I'm going to show you the Windows 10 creators update let me start by sort of outlining how we think about gaming from Microsoft we have this vision of the games you want to play with the friends you want to play with on the devices you want to play on first let me show you how that expresses itself in Windows 10 and creators update if you go into settings the first thing you notice is we've added a gaming category if we click into gaming we see we have four initial options with creators update game bar and game DVR are already a part of the product what we're adding is broadcasting in game mode it will start with game mode game mode will deliver performance benefits in two metrics both are frames-per-second metrics metrics one is peak and the other is consistency the consistency of the frames per second average over time why that's important is because at any given moment you may have a peak and then if your system is being taxed that there's a lot of visual information on the screen or if you've got a lot of software running on your PT you can see a precipitous drops of frames and the experience then is stuttering or glitches in the playback of the title that's not only like not a good gaming experience but it also makes put you at a competitive disadvantage so game mode is going to normalize over time and that's the more important metric for us the mode will recognize when there's resource contention on the system and it will step in to prioritize those resources to deliver the benefits I just described so it could be that you have a lower or entry level PC gaming device and it's going to struggle to give you a really high-end gaming type of experience game mode can help in the interest of giving you that experience by prioritizing with resources we're all go into settings in the game bar and you can see that I've got an area for game mode where I can toggle that on once that has done it this game forever will run in game mode until I turn that off again flexibility for the PC gamer so they can make the choices they want the second thing that is a big part of the creator's update for gamers is beam integration so we've done it on the console what I'm going to show you is here on Windows 10 and it's built right into the shell so it's a day if you're a streamer you want to stream you download a third-party software and you run you have to configure that and then you run it concurrent with your game and that's doable a lot of people gamers understand that but there's a lot of people who are interested in streaming they do a lot of consuming of streams that may be intimidated by that amount of work they're not technical enough beam is going to make that easy because what you'll do and I'll show it here is if you are in a game and you hit Windows G there's a broadcast icon and if you hit that broadcast icon it's now launching the beam experience writings inside this game I have some configuration options for camera and microphone I'll go ahead and just start the broadcast you can see my picture in picture so I am broadcasting and then what I'll show you is I'll pull up an edge browser here on the right and you are now going to see my stream now this is not local area network this is going up to the cloud and back down and now if you watch my cursor you can see me moving it back and forth and there's just a slight hesitation this is the the near real-time experience we're describing if I were doing this on another platform you or I would be waiting 10 or 216seconds to see my cursor move so you can see how that really really gives advantage and created a wonderful experience for people who are receiving and can participate in streams now to another update coming this time through Microsoft edge we caught up with Divya Kumar to tell us all of that so here I've got multiple tabs open on my Microsoft edge screen and previously you can actually just hover over individual tabs to get a visual preview of the skillet page but will happen to have that feature but what we are actually introduced is there is a an option to show tap preview so if I click on that icon you'll actually see a bar pop up and you will see all your tabs that you have open so now you can compare every single page you have that's easy and compare content and you don't actually have to go to the individual pages wait for them to load the really just saves me time now say I'm done and I'm bored of just holiday planning but I really never be boring but I wanted to go do some shopping get gear up for my upcoming holiday but I don't really want to lose these tabs that I've got opened but then I don't really want to save them they're just essentially research from web coming holiday I can just use this feature that we've got here that cut the costs at these chat aside I click the icon and all those times that I could be had to open have been swept away but they haven't disappeared I go into the center where all the tabs that I've actually just swept away live essentially and you can see that those times all show up here and the right hand left hand side pane and I can restore them if I wanted to go back into holiday planning but right now I just want to do some maybe go through some shopping sites to see what I want to buy so I'm going to restore these time taps that I was looking through earlier and what they're all back in my time and I can get right back into my shopping session without any disruption at all the other core focus of we've had with Microsoft edge is just giving users a better reading experience one of the things that we did previously where it's Microsoft edge is not the default PDF reader we wanted to obviously lose that and with creators update 4 you'll see is Microsoft edge it's now the default ebook reader so anything that's an e publication course including PDF books that you download from Windows Store free or purchase Microsoft edge now becomes the default reader for those books so really just removes the need to download another app for it so say I went and download a few classics from the Windows Store you'll see Adventures of Sherlock Holmes time machine now they'll show up under hub where previously we had favourites reading list history and downloads you'll also see the books icon I can go ahead and just click on one of the books and the books essentially renders just like it would this would an e-reader I can scroll through my pages using the keyboard I can scroll through pages using the scroll bar at the bottom or I can use a multiple ereader functionality up top or I can go through all the chapters I can bookmark using the bookmark tool I also have the ability to change background color or font sizes what fonts I'm using or even the spacing between the text just makes it much more easier makes it more comfortable to read at the same time if you're in a course on a supported market and if you've got course on enabled on your device I can highlight one of the words in the book right click ask Cortana and Cortana pops in to help you with a reference so this is some of the great features that obviously come into Microsoft edge would create as updates and then obviously like I mentioned before you'll see security battery life and performance updates as well sascha Tanya normally you and I are co-hosting this week on Windows but today you are here to talk about something that is very near and dear to your heart that is Windows mixed reality so first off what is Windows mixed reality Windows mixed reality experience that lights up everything from the hololens to a new class of immersive headset so for the creators update what does that mean and how is it going to support the Windows mixed reality so the creatives update will unlock a new set of developers who can use our developer kit to make new content for Windows mix reality headsets you've talked about headsets what's the future look like for Windows mix reality what can we look forward to we've gone on some really powerful partnerships with OEMs we'll be releasing these headsets what's great about these headsets they're using this amazing technology from hololens that enables inside out tracking see there's no setup and they all start at just 2928dollars thanks so much to Tanya we're excited so the creators update also incorporates new features for the windows 10 apps you know and love for more on some of the cool new stuff you can do will toss it back over to Ben the windows team so the move isn't he actively act now in the creator's update I includes support for 360-degree videos so that's a pretty cool addition one of the things that we see people doing in maps for example here you can see an example where I'm planning a trip that I'm going to take to Skagway Alaska this summer my friends and I are going to stay in this cool bed-and-breakfast which is just here and I'm going to use maps to kind of plan out one of the trips and the hikes that you want to take so I'm going to say let's start my journey from that location and then I'm going to go down here and fly and the start of the trail and say that's where I'm going to end up and then get my directions which you know looks pretty standard but one of the cool things here with the Maps experience is I can use the inking aim to measure and plan what my hikes gonna look like so I'm going to draw directly onto the map starting at the end of the direction there to come down to this body of water and we're going to kind of hike around it I'm just drawing directly on the screen here and go around the top here and then finish back there and you can see now and it's figured out that that's 2.3 miles that sounds like a pretty good height but I also want to share where we're going to meet up for lunch so I'm going to just go over here and draw arrows they meet here so we know where now somebody's faster than the others they'll know where to meet so they go ahead and meet there the creators update also improves Windows 10 security and privacy meters we talked to Cheryl and from the windows team to find out what new features are keeping Windows users base and secure now Charlaine privacy and security is very important to a lot of people how does the creator's update address privacy and security concerns you know the creator's update is fantastic let's talk security first so the Windows Defender security Center combines security and health options in one place so it's easier for people to see and control Windows 10 device security and health options okay so there's also something called a privacy dashboard tell me what that well the privacy dashboard is a new dashboard that's going to let you see and manage activity across multiple devices as well as changes to how Windows 10 privacy settings will be designed and featured for customers in the upcoming creators of space fantastic now if you want to learn more about security and privacy for Windows 10 head over to the windows blogs speaking of the windows blog we have someone next that we caught up with you know the thing or two about this major update I am here with the editor-in-chief of the Windows blog and Molly you have gotten a chance to be close and personal with the creators update tell me what's making your top 136list another really great new feature coming is called mini view this keeps an ever-present window on top of what you're working on so that window could be something like binge watching your favorite show or being on a Skype call and that stays on top of what you're working on also you'll notice a new category coming to the Windows Store called books and finally there's nightlight settings now this is really great because if you're working late at night the screen is bright and with night light it lowers the blue light emitted from your screen and also helps you sleep better at night GameChanger now all I where can they learn more about this stuff everything you need to know is on blog windows
